Homemade tricks to remove scratches from the body

Keeping the car paint intact, without any scratches or scrapes, is practically impossible. No matter how careful you are, sooner or later an unsightly line will appear across the body.

If you have contracted full-risk insurance, repairing it will not have any cost, but it will count as a claim, with the possible penalty or impact on the policy rate.

Therefore, unless it is an area where the bodywork already has several touches or someone has purposely destroyed the sheet, it is best to avoid the part. In this case, there are two options: forget about the incident or try to hide the scratch.

Some initial assessments

Before getting down to work, you have to assess the possibility of success. Not all scratches can be solved by using personal skills or the results are not worth the effort. The time that has passed since the scratch appeared, its depth and size are decisive when deciding whether the mission is worth undertaking.

It is not the same to repair a recent scratch than another that has taken a long time: rust and dirt take their toll and the result will not be the same, no matter how hard you try.

On the other hand, cars have several layers of paint, usually three: a primer, which is applied on the sheet to prevent the appearance of rust and corrosion; a layer of color; and finally a varnish or lacquer. Therefore, it happens as with wounds on the skin: the deeper a scratch, the more difficult it will be to hide it.

Alternatives on the market

If you dare to take the step, in stores you will find different solutions to make the scratches on the body disappear. In any case, do not forget that they are remedies whose effectiveness is conditioned by the type of scratch in question: going to the workshop may be mandatory in some cases.

Choose one remedy or another, do not forget that before applying the product you must clean and dry the area that you are going to repair well.

Polishing or 'polish'. It is the most widely used product and the results are more than acceptable as long as the scratch is not very deep; in light tones the finish is significantly better and you will need a best car polisher for beginners for this purpose. There are different polish options, depending on what you want to achieve. The most basic are scratch remover pastes : besides being cheap, they are very easy to use, just use a microfiber cloth or sponge. To achieve a better finish, choose a polishing kit: they incorporate the product to polish and remove scratches, sandpaper and sponge. In any case, don't skimp on the budget and choose a good quality polish.

Marker pen. It's a quick fix for repairing small scratches, but don't expect great results. Keep in mind that you must choose a marker with the same color as the car: if it is white or black there will not be too many problems, but for other tones it will be more complicated. In favor, the simplicity of use and its price.

Scratch repair cloth. The product is a small cloth or mitt impregnated with a polish that is applied directly to the bodywork once it is clean. It hides small scratches, but does not repair them; if they are deep, the effects are hardly noticeable. It serves to shine more than for anything else.
Spray paint. Body colors are so varied that finding the exact paint can be difficult. The best way to avoid disappointments is to get hold of the car's color code and order the paint from a manufacturer with it. The code is a sticker with a combination of letters and numbers - or just numbers or letters - that is usually under the hood or in the trunk, in the spare wheel well. Before using the spray, don't forget to protect the area around the scratch with masking tape. Then, spray carefully and at the distance indicated by the manufacturer, until the scratch is completely covered.
